What Is Permissions Prompting?
Permissions prompting gives users the power to manage and understand app behavior. By integrating with Ubuntu’s AppArmor, it enforces sandboxing and ensures that users approve every app action. Since apps don’t need any modification to work with this feature, users benefit from an easy, hassle-free experience.
Oliver Smith, the Interim Engineering Director for Ubuntu Desktop at Canonical, explains, “Prompting mediates access at the system call level, tightly controlling all actions, even for apps unaware of the mediation.”
Key Features in Ubuntu 24.10
Ubuntu 24.10’s first version of permissions prompting focuses on controlling home interface permissions, offering users more insight into what apps are doing. To achieve this, Ubuntu 24.10 includes two powerful tools:
- Security Center: A graphical app that enables users to manage prompt rules easily.
- prompting-client: A command-line tool that offers similar control for advanced users.
Both tools, developed as Snap apps, rely on updates to snapd 2.65 and AppArmor 4.0. Moreover, future updates to Security Center will bring even more capabilities, such as encryption management and firewall control, making it a versatile security tool.
