LF Networking (LFN), the networking division of The Linux Foundation, is expanding its mission in 2025 with a bold new strategy focused on the convergence of open source, artificial intelligence (AI), and cloud-native technologies.
At the Open Networking & Edge Summit (ONES) in London, co-located with KubeCon, LFN revealed its 2025 strategic roadmap. The initiative positions open source as a foundational element for next-generation networking infrastructure, bolstered by AI integration and cloud-native design.
LFN introduced two new open-source projects to highlight its push into AI:
Project Salus: A responsible AI toolkit focused on safe and ethical AI practices.
Essedum: An AI framework specifically designed for networking applications.
These additions are part of LFN’s broader effort to drive AI innovation across telecom and enterprise networking.
LFN also announced the CAMARA Spring25 Meta-Release, a major update to its open-source platform tailored for telecom applications. This release includes enhancements to existing services and improved integration with cloud-native and AI technologies.
To accompany its roadmap, LFN published its annual global survey. The results underscore the critical role of open source in networking:
92% of organizations consider open-source projects vital to their future.
73% are already adopting cloud-native networking.
74% believe open source is essential for AI in networking.
Top AI use cases include network automation (57%), security (50%), and predictive maintenance (41%).
Main adoption barriers are skills gaps (38%) and security concerns (37%).
LFN is addressing adoption challenges through:
Super Blueprints: These serve as reference implementations to help overcome architectural complexity and legacy integration.
Nephio Project: Simplifies CNF deployment with declarative service descriptions and intent-based automation.
CNTi Initiative: Defines best practices for CNF development and offers test frameworks.
To close the skills gap, LFN offers a robust catalog of e-learning courses on Kubernetes and cloud-native networking. These resources are in high demand and play a crucial role in upskilling the global open networking community.
LF Networking’s 2025 strategy is a comprehensive push toward smarter, cloud-native, and AI-driven networks. By combining technical innovation with community-driven training, LFN continues to lead the open-source charge in reshaping the future of global networking infrastructure.
