Elive 3.8.50 LTS Officially Released

elive

After more than six years since its last stable version, Elive has finally introduced Elive 3.8.50 LTS, a long-awaited release built on Debian GNU/Linux 12. This release marks a significant milestone for the project, combining stability with a nostalgic yet modern desktop experience.

Built on Debian 12 “Bookworm”

The new LTS version is powered by Debian 12, also known as Bookworm. As a result, users can expect improved stability, updated packages, and long-term support. Since this is the final Elive version based on Debian 12, the LTS tag ensures extended usability and reliability for existing users.

Lightweight Yet Feature-Rich Experience

Elive continues to stand out by offering both the classic Enlightenment E16 and the modern E27 desktop environments. These provide users with flexibility depending on their preferences. While E16 focuses on stability and low resource usage, E27 introduces a more refined and modern interface.

In addition, Elive includes several custom enhancements that improve usability and performance. These tweaks ensure a smoother and more enjoyable desktop experience, especially on older hardware.

32-bit Support and OpenRC Option

One of the most notable aspects of this release is its continued support for 32-bit systems. At a time when many Linux distributions have dropped 32-bit compatibility, Elive remains accessible to users with older machines.

Moreover, the installer now offers support for OpenRC. This gives users the option to avoid systemd, which some consider controversial. Therefore, Elive provides more freedom in system configuration compared to many mainstream distributions.

New Features and Improvements

Elive 3.8.50 LTS introduces several interesting additions. A standout feature is the new Synthwave Player, a music application developed in-house over several months. It comes preloaded with a curated set of tracks, allowing users to explore the distro’s aesthetic immediately.

Additionally, the release includes a lightweight desktop clock designed for the E16 environment. There is also a unique non-AI voice interaction tool that enables simple hands-free control while maintaining minimal system resource usage.

Final Debian 12-Based Elive Release

The developers have confirmed that this will be the last version based on Debian 12. Consequently, this release serves as a stable foundation for users who prefer long-term reliability over frequent upgrades.

Availability

Elive 3.8.50 LTS “Retrowave” is available for download as both 64-bit and 32-bit live ISO images. Users can test the system without installation and explore its features, including the built-in Synthwave Player experience.
