Intel has launched the “microcode-20241029” release for Linux users to address known stability issues in its 13th Gen “Raptor Lake” and 14th Gen “Raptor Lake Refresh” processors. These CPUs, widely used by gamers and power users, experienced crashes, unexpected shutdowns, and error messages due to internal voltage processing and USB hub compatibility issues.

Key Fixes in Intel’s New Microcode Update

The update aims to improve system reliability by addressing critical issues:

  1. Voltage Processing Fix
Previous voltage management issues led to system instability. This microcode update enhances voltage control, reducing crashes and improving overall CPU stability.

  2. Accurate Error Reporting
Users often received incorrect Pconfig error messages. This update corrects error reporting for better diagnostic accuracy.

  3. USB 3.2 Hub Compatibility
An issue with the USB 3.2 hub caused abnormal signals to the xHCI controller, affecting data transfer. This fix improves USB stability, ensuring smoother operations with connected devices.

Update Process for Linux Users

The microcode patch, available through the Linux kernel, will be implemented by Linux distributors. Users can receive this fix through standard OS updates without additional installation steps, streamlining the patch process.

Background on Intel’s Stability Updates

After acknowledging microcode flaws in July 2024, Intel worked with ASUS and MSI, who released BIOS updates to mitigate initial instability issues. However, the “microcode-20241029” release now provides a comprehensive solution, enhancing performance for all Raptor Lake Linux users.
