Linux Mint has released the beta of Linux Mint 22.3 “Zena”, delivering a refined desktop experience with several usability-focused enhancements. This release marks the fourth and final update in the Linux Mint 22 series and builds on the improvements introduced in Linux Mint 22.2 “Zara”.

While the update doesn’t radically change the platform’s direction, it focuses on polishing core desktop components. As a result, Linux Mint 22.3 feels more consistent, modern, and approachable—especially for everyday users.

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS Base and Updated Kernel

Linux Mint 22.3 is based on Ubuntu 24.04.3 LTS, inheriting the stability and long-term support expected from Canonical’s flagship release. The distribution ships with the Linux 6.14 kernel by default. However, users also gain access to Ubuntu’s Hardware Enablement (HWE) stack.

In the coming weeks, Mint users can expect newer components such as Linux kernel 6.17 and Mesa 25.2 through official updates. This ensures strong hardware compatibility, especially for newer CPUs and GPUs.

Unlike Ubuntu, Linux Mint continues to disable Snap packages by default. Instead, applications like Firefox and Thunderbird ship as traditional DEB packages. Users who want Snap support can still enable it manually.

Mint Menu Gets Its Biggest Redesign Yet

The most visible change in Linux Mint 22.3 is the revamped Mint Menu, Cinnamon’s take on the Start Menu concept. After visual updates in 22.1 and theme tweaks in 22.2, this release focuses on structure and usability.

The menu keeps its familiar three-column layout, but the design feels noticeably different. A full-height sidebar now displays the user account picture, session controls, and symbolic category icons. The search bar moves to the bottom, while application descriptions improve clarity.

Developers also added extensive customization options. Users can now adjust the search bar position, toggle session buttons, choose between symbolic or full-color icons, and fine-tune the menu layout to match personal preferences.

Additionally, the sidebar’s favorites list no longer duplicates apps already pinned to the panel. Instead, it includes practical shortcuts such as Text Editor, Calculator, and Character Map, reducing clutter.

Improved File Search and On-Screen Keyboard

Linux Mint 22.3 enhances productivity beyond the menu redesign. The Nemo file manager now features expanded search capabilities, making it easier to locate files across large directories.

The release also introduces a modernized on-screen keyboard, improving usability for touchscreen devices and accessibility-focused setups. These changes align Mint more closely with modern desktop expectations without sacrificing simplicity.

Visual Polish With New Iconography

The update includes new monochrome icons, contributing to a cleaner and more consistent look across the desktop. Combined with earlier GTK theme refinements, Linux Mint 22.3 delivers a cohesive visual experience that feels updated yet familiar.
