openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1 Released: Enhanced Security and Features for Lightweight Workloads

OpenSUSE

The openSUSE project has officially launched openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1, offering an advanced and secure platform tailored for containerized and virtualized workloads. This release follows openSUSE Leap Micro 6.0, aligning closely with SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro to provide robust solutions for hosting containers and virtual machines.

Key Highlights of openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1

To ensure smoother user experiences, the update introduces the opensuse-migration-tool. This tool simplifies upgrades between Leap Micro releases, reducing complexities during transitions. Additionally, it supports soft reboots, enabling faster system restarts without fully shutting down.

Moreover, security enhancements take center stage in this release. The system now enforces stricter policies by disallowing password-based remote root logins. This change, which extends to the Cockpit management interface, strengthens remote access security. For added protection, two-factor authentication (TOTP) is now available for PAM logins.

Enhanced Features for Modern Workloads

The release includes several tools that improve functionality. For instance, vhostmd is now available to support SAP virtualization scenarios. The update also enhances the jeos-firstboot wizard, streamlining initial setup processes. Furthermore, users gain access to ZRAM support, boosting performance on resource-constrained systems.

Simplified Installation and Automation

openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1 offers diverse installation options, including Self-install Images, Preconfigured Images, and Fully Encrypted Disk Images. Notably, traditional installers are no longer supported. Instead, the Ignition and Combustion tools allow users to automate and customize installations efficiently.

For USB-based installations, the Self-install image is highly recommended. These updates make deployment faster and easier, catering to developers and system administrators alike.

Upgrade from Earlier Versions

Alongside the release, the project announced the end of life (EOL) for openSUSE Leap Micro 5.5. Users are strongly encouraged to upgrade to version 6.0 or 6.1 to maintain support and receive updates.

A Community-Driven, Enterprise-Grade OS

Built on SUSE Linux Enterprise Micro, openSUSE Leap Micro leverages hardened security and compliance components. As a result, it provides enterprise-level reliability in a community-driven environment.
